LG KG220 - Basically Bold

For all the highbrow upgrades in technology, there’s nothing wrong in taking a breather and opting to go back to the basics.
The KG220 can’t be dubbed as primitive though; it’s better off being tagged as a classic. The 220 has a flip-open mechanism that makes it reasonably compact but not slim. Its sleek, jet black exterior and nifty interior antenna gives it a classical appeal, so it’s quite presentable in most social scenarios.
This unit is a decent option for those who would rather go for no-fuss features. The 220 has all the essential features you look for in a phone including an address book with photocall feature, triband technology, GPRS, WAP Browser, downloadable java games, voice memo recorder, and words prediction feature.
The built-in VGA camera may be low in resolution, but it captures images fairly quickly. Sadly though, transferring your precious images is a whole different story. There’s no Bluetooth. Heck, it doesn’t even have an infrared sensor, so your images will either have stored eternally in your phone memory, or you can opt to send them one by one via MMS.
This LG KG220 is definitely not flashy, but it has a decent set of features. Its discreet from makes it a viable alternative for those who dare to use a public transport, but, at the same time, it can pass as a classy mobile.

Motorola’s Good Technology Group to Expand Beyond Email with Good™ 6.0
Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced the upcoming availability of Good™ Mobility Suite version 6.0 which includes a new managed-service virtual private network (VPN) as well as an enhanced device management and security platform. Good 6.0, which will include Good Mobile Connection, Good Administration Center and Good Mobile Messaging, will provide organizations with more secure, seamless, and manageable mobile access to enterprise information and applications.
The new Good Mobile Connection is a managed-service VPN that is capable of delivering a seamless, managed data connection from mobile devices to data and applications behind the corporate firewall. Good’s existing trusted transport, which is currently used for Good Mobile Messaging, will now enable other enterprise applications and services, such as instant messaging, intranets and thick-client applications to securely connect with behind-the-firewall resources.
“We expect the majority of enterprise users to have access to corporate applications from their mobile device within the next 2-3 years,” says Jack Gold, President of J. Gold Associates, LLC, an industry analyst firm based in Northborough, MA (www.jgoldassociates.com). “However, one of the limiting factors to providing such capability has been the inability to secure the connection and manage it seamlessly across multiple networks as users crossed network boundaries. End user transparent managed security is key to expanding the footprint of enterprise applications to more mobile devices.”
Good Mobile Connection provides a persistent network-agnostic connection via the Good Network Operations Center (NOC) to behind-the-firewall data and applications which improves the user experience for mobile workers. Organizations will now be able to deploy virtually any application leveraging standard TCP protocols over the Good Mobile Connection transport with no modifications or custom coding required. To guard against hacking or denial of service attacks, Good Mobile Connection allows IT to set granular restrictions on both the type and location of assets that can be accessed behind firewalls in addition to the device-level security capabilities provided in the Good Mobility Suite.
“Our customers demand secure wireless access to enterprise data while on-the-go,” said Todd Christy, chief technology officer and co-founder of Pyxis Mobile. “We look forward to working with Motorola Good Technology Group and leveraging the ‘always-on’ secure connection of Good Mobile Connection which will enable our customers to have secure, anytime, anywhere access to Pyxis’ applications.”
Unified Management with Good Administration Center
The Good Administration Center will provide a unified environment for deploying and managing all Good applications, devices, security policies, and data access rights. This web console provides flexible access for IT personnel to manage devices from wherever they are. Good Administration Center also utilizes web services API’s that provide the ability to automate management operations and integrate with other third party management portals and processes.
Enhanced, Configurable User Experience with Good Mobile Messaging 6.0
Good Mobile Messaging 6.0 continues to improve the mobile experience with new features designed to enable business users to get things done more easily and to provide greater personalization options. Key new features include a customizable home screen, client API’s which allow third party applications to more easily inter-operate, and voice-activated dialing even when the device is password protected.
Good’s Architecture Simplifies and Reduces Costs of Mobilizing Enterprises
Unlike competing solutions that require the installation, maintenance, and interoperability of multiple different servers in the enterprise, Good’s Network Operation Center (NOC)-based architecture simplifies life for IT. With Good 6.0 there is no need to install, upgrade, or maintain multiple components within an enterprise’s network and demilitarized zone (DMZ). The Good Mobility Suite is flexible and compatible with existing systems so that there is no need to upgrade or replace existing infrastructure.
Support from the Shop Floor to the Corner Office
Good offers enterprise customers a broad range of mobile computing solutions from the shop floor to the corner office by supporting devices ranging from the MC35 and MC70 enterprise digital assistant (EDA) to the Motorola Q family, as well as a variety of other Windows Mobile and Palm OS devices from Palm, Samsung, HTC, and other manufacturers.
“Mobile messaging alone is no longer enough for today’s mobile enterprise. Although mobile messaging remains a killer application, enterprises need an end-to-end mobility platform that enables them to manage all of their critical mobile applications across Wi-Fi and WAN/cellular networks,” said Sue Forbes, senior director of product management and marketing, Motorola Good Technology Group. “With Good 6.0, we will provide organizations the ability to simply and securely mobilize all segments of their business across a wide variety of devices, carriers, and networks.”
Availability
Good 6.0 is expected to be available later in 2008 through certified value-added resellers as part of the Motorola PartnerSelect program, carrier reseller partners, and directly through Motorola Good Technology Group. The software and service will support a broad range of smartphones and will support both IBM Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange email systems. For more information about Good 6.0, please go to www.motorola.com/good.
Starz Entertainment Selects Motorola Technology for Migration to MPEG-4
Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today announced it is implementing a four-channel, high-definition (HD) MPEG-4/AVC encoding system for Starz Entertainment, a premium movie service provider in the United States, to begin migration from current MPEG-2 installations to MPEG-4 installations. The system compresses, encrypts, modulates, and receives HD signals within a single integrated transmission system to allow Starz to expand its HD offerings for subscribers. The system is currently being implemented for Starz Entertainment’s existing HD channels, Starz, Starz Kids and Family HD, Starz Edge HD and Starz Comedy HD. The latest addition to Starz Entertainment’s HD movie channel lineup, Encore HD, will be launched in MPEG-4 concurrent with this migration.
“Starz has a history of delivering the best in first-run, hit films in HD and we continue to expand our programming lineup with the highest quality for our viewers,” said Ray Milius, SVP Programming Operations & IT, Starz. “Motorola’s highly efficient MPEG-4 encoding system allows us to seamlessly migrate from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 with the video quality that we require while conserving satellite bandwidth to deliver diverse additional HD content for our customers.”
Motorola is integrating high quality and high efficiency technologies to deliver high-bandwidth HD channels through increased capacity. Key to this migration is Motorola’s DSR-6050 digital satellite receiver/transcoder, which supports both MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 outputs to enable Starz to transition to more efficient MPEG-4 formats, while maintaining compatability with existing MPEG-2 based cable networks. Also included in the new uplink and the new receivers is support for DVB-S2 satellite modulation which can increase the satellite transponder output by 50% - thus expanding the number of possible HD channels without increasing transponder usage.
“As a leader in video delivery, Motorola has been at the forefront of helping service providers, operators and programmers deliver high-quality HD content efficiently,” said Doug Means, vice president and general manager, IP Video Solutions, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. “As Starz demonstrates, our field-proven MPEG-4 transmission technology provides the flexibility programmers need to seamlessly and successfully meet their distribution plans.”
As a long-time leader in HD digital compression systems and a member of the Grand Alliance HD encoding effort, Motorola has deployed hundreds of HD encoding systems in the MPEG-2 standard. The MPEG-4/AVC technology has been optimized for today’s content requirements, handling both 1920 x 1080i and 1280 x 720p resolutions at approximately half the bandwidth required with similar MPEG-2 coded signals.

SAMSUNG Concludes Contract with the International Olympic Committee to Sponsor Olympic Games Through 2016

SAMSUNG, an official TOP Partner of the Olympic Games in wireless telecommunications equipment, concluded a sponsorship contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on April 23, 2007 at the Diaoyutai State Guest house in Beijing, China. SAMSUNG first became a full sponsor of the Olympic Games during the Nagano Olympic Winter Games in 1998. According to the new contract, SAMSUNG will officially sponsor the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement for the next eight years, through the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games in 2010, the London Olympic Games in 2012, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and the 2016 Olympic Games.
The SAMSUNG-IOC Olympic Games sponsorship contract signing ceremony was attended by SAMSUNG Chairman, Kun-Hee Lee, who arrived in Beijing after a three-week business trip to Europe, and more than 200 officials in sports from around the world, including International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) John Furlong, and London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) Chairman Sebastian Coe.
According to guidelines set forth by SAMSUNG Chairman, Kun-Hee Lee in 1996 -“Devise strategies that can raise brand value, which is a leading intangible asset and the source of corporate competitiveness, to the global level” - SAMSUNG decided to sponsor the Olympic Movement to strengthen its global corporate image and brand value and has been carrying out a global marketing campaign with the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement as the single theme.
Accordingly, SAMSUNG concluded a TOP (The Olympic Partner) sponsorship contract with the IOC in 1997. Since then, the company has been an official sponsor in the wireless telecommunications equipment category, including the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. By sponsoring the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement for the last ten years, SAMSUNG has made great strides towards becoming a “cutting-edge global brand” that leads the mobile phone industry. The Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 are expected to be the climax of the company’s efforts for the last ten years.
In fact, SAMSUNG’s brand value grew more than five-fold from a mere 3.1 billion dollars in 1999 to 16.2 billion dollars in 2006, according to the annual company brand value ratings by Interbrand, the world’s largest brand consulting company. According to Strategy Analytics, a market research organization, SAMSUNG’s global mobile phone market share went up from 5.0% in 1999 to 11.6% last year, and its sales volume increased seven times from 16.65 million units to 114 million units.
The Partnership between SAMSUNG and the Olympic Movement is mutually beneficial. SAMSUNG is demonstrating its cutting-edge wireless technology at the Olympic Games, and is fully living up to its corporate philosophy - “contribute to society” - through the Olympic Movement. Wireless Olympic Works (WOW), first released by SAMSUNG for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, is a service that enables the real-time transmission of Olympic Games information to mobile phones.
SAMSUNG seeks to boost the value of the Olympic Games and prepare for the Olympic Ceremonies as a worldwide partner in the wireless telecommunications equipment category, making a shift from a voice- based , “mobile phone-centered” sponsorship to delivering all forms of information via the mobile phone.
By sponsoring the Olympic Games for the next eight years, including the TOP VII (Vancouver 2010 -London 2012) and TOP VIII (host countries not yet determined), in addition to the TOP IV (Nagano 1998 -Sydney 200 0 ), TOP V (Salt Lake City 2002 -Athens 2004) and TOP VI (Torino 2006 -Beijing 2008), SAMSUNG will create a strong association between the Olympic Movement and SAMSUNG, and will further enhance the status of the SAMSUNG brand. By concluding a long-term Olympic sponsorship contract, SAMSUNG is proving that investing in the Olympic Games is key to growth of a “brand” and “mobile phones”, and is showing the world that investing in the Olympic Games means unlimited growth potential.
Vice Chairman and CEO, Jong-Yong Yun of SAMSUNG Electronics and International Olympic Committee Marketing Commission Chairman, Gerhard Heiberg held a signing ceremony on SAMSUNG’s eight-year sponsorship at a specially produced signing table at the Diaoyutai State Guest house on the evening of April 23. SAMSUNG Chairman, Kun-Hee Lee demonstrated great interest by personally welcoming officials in the sports field from across the globe, including the IOC President, Jacques Rogge.
During the signing ceremony on April 23, Daniel Newham from England and Xuchunni from China were joint MCs, and Canadian Ana Yang gave a bubble performance that symbolizes the “Dreams of the Olympic Games and SAMSUNG.” The ceremony was made all the more meaningful with the participation of a performer from England, who plays the main character of the musical “The Little Prince,” officials from countries who will host the Olympic Games, and Sumi Jo, a Korean soprano.

Bang & Olufsen’s expertise in concept development, user interface experience, acoustic sound capabilities and design skills together with SAMSUNG’s leadership in mobile phone technology, engineering and quality have realized a new way of combining unique music and mobile experiences for consumers.
“Since we started our first co-operation with Bang & Olufsen, we have only been confirmed in our belief that both companies share a passion for innovation and consumer-focused technology. Serenata is another example of new ways to think of the mobile phone. I’m proud to say that our customers can see a true innovation of music player and mobile phone as we have opened a new era of mobile phones with Serene two years ago”, says Geesung Choi, President of the Telecommunications Network Business in SAMSUNG Electronics.
“We have high expectations to Serenata, as it is a result of our joint vision to constantly push the boundaries, and bring unique and exciting products to our customers”, states Torben Ballegaard Sørensen, CEO of Bang & Olufsen.
Acoustic performance dedicated to use
Serenata represents an innovative approach to a personal music player. Two companies’ astonish-ing technology and design bring the experience of digital music to quite another level for music fans on the move.
Serenata features a built-in stereo speaker system which delivers outstanding sound quality. Equipped with a built-in hi-fi speaker and outstanding bass system, the phone delivers high quality sound without any distortion. With this state-of-art technology, mobile phone users can enjoy various kinds of music from pop and rock to jazz and classic in the same way they would through their hi-fi system at home. At anytime and any place, you can listen to the opera in a music quality as if you were there yourself through the integrated loudspeaker system or through the dedicated stereo EarSet 3.
Combining only top-performing speaker components with ingenious acoustic principles and Bang & Olufsen-patented ICEpower amplification, we get the world’s best acoustic performance. The focus has been to provide uncompromised and totally authentic music performance, with emphasis on playback of “uncompressed” music. Besides handling lossless, Serenata also handles playback in various formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC.
As a dedicated music phone, Serenata brings special ring tones for the users who want to have unique and sophisticated sounds designed by Bang & Olufsen. The sound achieved from a triangle, wind chimes, various types of glass and different types of woods will offer beautiful sounds to match any situation.
Sophisticated design inspired by nature
Serenata is a pocket-sized music mobile phone with an organic rounded design. “I often take long walks by the sea where I live”, explains Bang & Olufsen designer David Lewis, “and the shape of the nicely rounded stones that are washed to shore has always fascinated me. These stones have been carefully shaped and rounded by rolling in the water for millions of years, and they are so wonderful to hold in your hand. This was what I was looking for.”
Whether standing on its integrated foot or nicely tucked in the palm of your hand, Serenata is a functional and outstanding music phone.
The contrast between the cool aluminum and the warm soft touch lacquer leaves an impression of elegance, slimness and craftsmanship.
Intuitive user interface
The unique music phone’s sound quality and elegant design does not compromise the ease of use.
The click wheel navigation gives users hassle-free control of music functions.
“The basic idea is simplicity and one-hand operation. There are very few actual keys. We use the wheel for all primary operation in the context sensitive menus, like dialing, writing and accessing the music lists. For secondary operation, the wheel is supported by on-screen operation based on sensi-touch technology”, explains Bang & Olufsen Chief designer David Lewis.
To assist the user throughout, the display changes color depending on whether it is in Phone mode (blue) or Music mode (red). Furthermore, the large 2.26-inch color LCD display developed by SAMSUNG allows Serenata to show album covers in an excellent resolution and facilitates on-screen navigation. Also, the innovative mobile phone features sensi-touch to enhance the usability.
“Besides the color-coding and intuitive user interface, we try to help the first-time user with a 4-minute simulation tutorial, which is played in the display, explaining some of the most frequently-used functionality”, Bang & Olufsen Business Manager Brian Laursen explains.
To enhance the usability, Bang & Olufsen has developed BeoPlayer, a simple software that can access and organize all music files on the PC and conveniently transfer them to Serenata. Also through the SAMSUNG PC studio, the users can synchronize the contacts, calendar and to-do list from their computer onto Serenata via Microsoft outlook.
Providing unique mobile experiences
With SAMSUNG’s leadership in mobile phone technology, Serenata represents a unique harmonization of music and mobile phone features. To offer enhanced multimedia functions, SAMSUNG brings High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) connectivity to Serenata. With 3.5 G connectivity, users can enjoy full multimedia features including music and video, e-mail, MMS and instant purchase and download of music tracks. Also the phone features a 4 Gigabyte solid-state memory for storing your digital music and data.
Featuring hi-fi speakers to deliver high quality sound reproduction and telephony, Serenata also provides a portable conference call feature, enabling multiple users to have a phone call a few feet away from the mobile phone.
Playback of music without disturbance from incoming calls or messages is made possible via the PureMusic function. Serenata still receives calls in the answering device or messages in the inbox, but you are not disturbed while you are listening to the music.
GIORGIO ARMANI and SAMSUNG Unveil New Luxury Mobile Phone as First Product under New Strategic Alliance

Giorgio Armani, one of the world’s leading fashion and lifestyle design companies, and SAMSUNG Electronics, a leading producer of mobile phones and telecommunications systems, unveiled the new Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG luxury mobile. Giorgio Armani presented the new mobile phone at a press briefing in his Armani/Teatro in Milan before his Spring Summer Women’s fashion show.
Designed by Giorgio Armani and realized by SAMSUNG Electronics, the Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG Mobile will meet the needs of those who aspire to own a technologically advanced and beautifully designed telephone with which to communicate and complete their lifestyle.
Through a new strategic alliance, starting with the Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG luxury mobile phone, the two companies plan to launch an innovative range of portable and home consumer electronics products under the Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani and Armani/Casa labels, founded on the combination of Giorgio Armani’s iconic design aesthetic and SAMSUNG’s cutting edge technology.
Giorgio Armani, President and Chief Executive Officer of Giorgio Armani S.p.A. said:
“Today fashion has expanded to encompass our way of life, not just how we dress, but how we design our home, the hotels we stay in, the car we drive and the technology we buy. In fact, we make as much of a personal statement with the mobile phones that we carry or the televisions we have in our living rooms as we do with the shoes and bags we wear or the furnishings we chose to place in our homes. These are all lifestyle decisions, where design and performance are the criteria. SAMSUNG has successfully anticipated the growing role for consumer electronics in our lives, while recognising the importance of self-expression in the development of its products.”
Geesung Choi, President of SAMSUNG Electronics said: “Today’s mobile phone manufacturers no longer just sell mobile phones, but sell more than the product itself – a slice of life and culture. We truly believe that our approach with Giorgio Armani is one step closer to our customers to enrich their lives with sophisticated style and cutting-edge technology.”
He added, “This is a groundbreaking collaboration between one of world’s most influential designers and an electronics leader. SAMSUNG’s innovative technology and Giorgio Armani’s established iconic design philosophy are a perfect match as exemplified by the state-of-the-art Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG mobile phone.”
The Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG Mobile
For the first time Giorgio Armani’s signature elegance and simplicity is applied to mobile phone design. A large 2.6-inch QVGA TFT LCD screen maximizes the user’s visual experience and optimizes the full touch-screen user interface (UI). Along with the outer appearance of the phone, the graphical user interface (GUI) and audio user interface (AUI) also reflect Giorgio Armani’s modern simplicity. By adapting a haptical UI, users can feel an immediate mild vibration when they touch icons on the display. Being the size of a credit card and a mere 10.5 mm in thickness, the Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG Phone fits sensuously into a user’s palm.
Despite its compactness, the phone is loaded with the latest powerful multi-media features. It is equipped with a 3-megapixel camera, a music player supporting various types of music formats and a full internet browser. Furthermore, the Giorgio Armani-SAMSUNG Mobile offers a microSD type external memory slot and comes with a Bluetooth® headset.
A specially designed Giorgio Armani leather carrying case is also included for protection.
The new mobile phone will be available at Giorgio Armani’s flagship stores and selected mobile phone shops.
