Mabuhay Philippines nominated for international awards

Mabuhay Satellite Corporation (MSC), the country’s only satellite owner and operator, was awarded a nomination for the Best Managed Satellite Operator of the Year Awards 2004 in the National Operator Category by Paris-based Euroconsult.

Euronconsult, with its 25 years of experience in the satellite sector in consulting services, is the world’s primary reference for market and company assessment in the satellite sector.

Its consulting capabilities are based on a worldwide expertise of the satellite sector and unique research capabilities with the highest quality skilled satellite analysts, experts and consultants supported by an extensive information center and comprehensive proprietary databases on the satellite business.

MSC was nominated for The Best Take-Up Profile of a National Operator category, wherein national satellite operators around the globe were assessed for satellite utilization and financial performance.

MPSC President Gabriel Pimentel said this was the first time that such awards were held for satellite companies around the world.

“Being the only Philippines satellite operator, it is every heart-warming to know that our performance was benchmarked by a reputable international body, and was adjudged to be among the industry leaders for our category in 2003,” he said.

Only three satellite companies out of the 34 fixed satellite service operators were nominated in the category.

The year 2003 “was the best year so far for Mabuhay and we had a good bottomline despite the very difficult environment prevailing in the industry. It was a result of persevering in maximizing what we can leverage out of our (satellite) footprint, and we are grateful to all our valued customers for their continued loyal support,” said Pimentel.

Footprint refers to the coverage of a satellite. MSC’s Agila II satellite has a footprint for its C band frequencies as far west as India and as far east as Hawaii, as far north as Mongolia and as far south as Indonesia, covering 20 countries. For its Ku-band, it covers China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Pimentel said part of the success was also due to the synergies within the PLDT Group and maximizing the use of the satellite transponders through technical support enhancements as well as offering more cost-effective rates for services.

Euroconsult said: “The awards were based on a cross analysis of financial, industrial and commercial ratios and is derived from the 2004 edition of The Comprehensive Benchmark of Leading Satellite Operators and the Corporate Profiles of the 34 Fixed Satellite Services Operators.”

Euroconsult came up with the awards in partnership with SPACE NEWS, the prime weekly newspaper for the global space community that provides news, insights and a common communications forum for the world’s space industry. The awarding ceremonies were held in Paris, France, during the recent World Satellite Business Week.
